So the DIY trend has exploded! People everywhere are finding the courage and inspiration to tackle projects that would normally be out of their comfort zone. Have you ever perused through Pinterest late at night and thought to yourself…
Famous last words… as the fire department rolls up to your house to put out the small kitchen flare up you managed to turn into a 3-alarm fire!
I think it is safe to say there are some ideas that are great DIY projects, but there are others that are best left to the professionals. So, I thought maybe we should chat about a couple of the signs that you might be in over your head:
1. You have the tools, but don’t know how to use them.
Just because you have the tools, doesn’t necessarily mean you are qualified to use them. According to my husband, I should NEVER use a knife (I’m a bit of a risk management nightmare when it comes to sharp objects). But on the flip side, would you drive a car that didn’t have wheels? Probably not…so why would you attempt to build something (like a website) without the proper tools?
There are plenty of DIY programs out there that will help you create a cozy little presence online that offer great user-friendly tools and monthly fees; promises that are too good to be true. However, if you are trying to design a website with a purpose, there is much more to it than just drag & drop functions and choosing stock photography.
If you’ve never built a website before, if you’re uncertain about what HTML or CSS code is, if you’re not sure what FTP or Hosting means… you’re likely at risk of hours and hours of reading, research and only feel overwhelmed by the process. Consider exploring the tools but have a sense of what you are in over your call. Then… call a professional website designer. Your sanity will thank you for it.
2. You know just enough to be dangerous.
This is the majority of the population and unfortunately the cause of many of our clients to contact us. Something is broken, code is missing, no back-up file is accessible or the website is down and the client has no clue how it happened.
In the case of your website, the knowledge to customize widgets, plugins, and layouts can have a dramatic effect on whether your website functions. When done correctly, they can create an environment that flows perfectly and encourages site visitors to stay longer and purchase from you. If done incorrectly, your entire site could crash! Know your limitations… if you get in over your head, it may end up costing you more in the long run!
3. All consuming.
There are never enough hours in a day for an Entrepreneur. At the end of most days our to-do list has only grown… no matter how many tasks we checked off! When you dive head first into a project it can consume you. Be conscious of how much time you are spending on it. Spending time against a project you are ill-equipped for can have you chasing your tail and losing focus on your objective. Focus your energy where you will have the greatest impact. In other words…do what you do best and leave the rest to a professional!
